Last week on Reputation Online we talked about social media and social networking and the case in favour of companies participating with their communities online.

This week we switch our focus to how to get started.  There's is so much out there, the trouble is knowing what would work best for you and your organisation.  Actually, it's essential to firstly conduct a review of your organisation's goals, where you stand in the marketplace, who your main audiences are and which social media they like to use before you embark on an online communications plan.

But it is always helpful to gather some ideas and handy tips to keep in mind while conducting that review,  To help you out with that, I contacted a colleague in the United States.  John Bates has been steadily building up knowledge and experience about the online world since 1994.  He's had his share of defeats and victories, but success always leaves clues behind.  I'll leave it to John to pass on his experience during this interview I recorded with him from his office in Los Angeles.
