The ‘Writing speeches that keep audiences listening’ workshop is designed for people who want to write better speeches for themselves or for others within their organisation. It has been designed and is best suited for people starting out or not particularly experienced in speechwriting. People who draft speeches for departmental heads and ministerial offices would benefit from this one-day workshop.
As the title suggests, during the workshop participants will learn how to properly prepare for the written speech – a speech that will keep the audience’s attention. All the key elements of a powerful speech are addressed and participants finish the workshop understanding how the audience needs to be left thoroughly informed, persuaded and entertained.
Several speeches are handed out at the workshop and used as examples. The trainer intersperses the workshop with videos of effective (and not-so-effective) presentations given by others to underline important themes. The rest of the day is devoted to practical skills. Participants, either alone or in pairs, begin to write parts of their own speeches, which are then loaded onto a computer and viewed through a data projector for critiquing.
Participants cover:
-
Writing in a lively but simple fashion;
-
Writing a great introduction;
-
Writing a powerful conclusion;
-
Telling stories;
-
Making effective use of PowerPoint.
During the workshop trainers stress the importance of ‘turning the camera on in the minds of the audience’ by telling stories and sharing personal experiences.
